Eligibility to Become an Income Tax Inspector

To become an income tax inspector, you must meet certain requirements.

Educational Qualification

You should have a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognized university.

Age Limit

  • General category: up to 30 years.
  • OBC category: up to 33 years.
  • SC/ST category:  upto 35 years.

Nationality

You must be a citizen of India.

Physical Standards

Height: Men are at least 157.5 cm tallWomen are 152 cm tall.

  • Chest (for men): A chest size of 81 cm with an expansion of 5 cm is required.

How to Become an Income Tax Inspector

You can become an income tax inspector by passing the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam. This is a competitive exam held every year. The process consists of four stages, and you need to clear each stage to be selected.

Stages of the SSC CGL Exam

  1. Tier I – Preliminary Exam: An objective-type test with multiple-choice questions.
  2. Tier II – Main Exam: Another objective-type test, but tougher than Tier I.
  3. Tier III – Descriptive Paper: A written exam that tests your writing skills in English or Hindi.
  4. Tier IV – Skill Test and Document Verification: A test to check computer skills and the verification of your documents. Physical fitness may also be checked in this stage.

  1. Tier I – Preliminary Exam

This is the first step in the SSC CGL process. It is a multiple-choice exam with four sections:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude (Math)
  • English Comprehension

The exam consists of 100 questions with a total of 200 marks. You will have 60 minutes to complete this exam.

  1. Tier II – Main Exam

Once you pass Tier I, you will take the Tier II exam. This also has multiple-choice questions in different subjects:

  • Quantitative Abilities (200 marks)
  • English Language and Comprehension (200 marks)
  • General Studies (only for certain jobs)

Each section of Tier II has 200 marks, and you get two hours to complete each section.

  1. Tier III – Descriptive Paper

This exam is a written test in which you have to write an essay, a letter, or a précis. You can choose to write in either English or Hindi. The aim is to check your writing skills. This paper is worth 100 marks, and you will have 60 minutes to finish it.

  1. Tier IV – Skill Test and Document Verification

In the final stage, you will be tested on your computer skills, like typing. Your original documents (education certificates, ID proof, etc.) will also be verified. After this, there is also a physical fitness test for certain roles.

Syllabus for SSC CGL Exam

It is important to know what subjects to study for the exam. Here’s a simple breakdown of the subjects you need to prepare for each tier:

Tier I Syllabus:

  1. General Intelligence and Reasoning: Puzzles, analogies, coding, decoding.
  2. General Awareness: Current events, Indian history, geography, economics.
  3. Quantitative Aptitude: Basic math like fractions, percentages, interest, and profit.
  4. English Comprehension: Basic grammar, sentence structure, and reading comprehension.

Tier II Syllabus:

Salary of an Income Tax Inspector

They are paid according to the 7th Pay Commission, which gives a basic salary of INR 44,900 per month in addition to other benefits like House Rent Allowance (HRA), Dearness Allowance (DA), and Travel Allowance (TA).

Promotion and Career Growth

Income tax inspectors can get promoted with experience to higher positions :

  • Income Tax Officer (ITO): After a few years, .
  • Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT): A senior position where you manage more important cases.
  • Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (DCIT): You will lead large teams and handle major investigations.
