ICWA stands for Institute of Cost and Works Accountants, from the institute’s former name, the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI). The ICWA course is today called the CMA (Cost and Management Accountant) course, run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI).

It has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Final, with exams in June and December, plus 15 months of practical training. You can register for Foundation after Class 10 or 12, and graduates can join directly at Intermediate. The facts below are taken from ICMAI’s own prospectus and website, as of September 2026.

ICWA and CMA: the same course under a new name

ICWA and CMA refer to the same qualification: the old ICWA course is today’s CMA (Cost and Management Accountant) course. The institute was set up in 1944 and became a statutory body in 1959 under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, as the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI). Members were known as ICWAs, which is where the ICWA name comes from.

ICMAI says Parliament recognised it as The Institute of Cost Accountants of India with effect from 1 February 2012, and the qualification has been marketed as CMA since then. In 2022, an amendment renamed the governing law itself: it is now the Cost Accountants Act, 1959. The institute works under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. An ICWA qualification and a CMA qualification therefore come from the same statutory body, and older ICWA members remain members of it.

One common mix-up is worth clearing up. ICMAI is not ICAI. ICAI (the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) runs the CA course; ICMAI runs CMA. They are separate statutory bodies with separate exams.

CMA course structure at a glance

The CMA course, formerly the ICWA course, has three levels: Foundation with 4 papers, Intermediate with 8 papers in 2 groups, and Final with 8 papers in 2 groups, including one elective. The current scheme is ICMAI’s Syllabus 2022, which is still the syllabus for the June 2026 and December 2026 terms, with 20 papers in all. Foundation is open after Class 10 or 10+2, graduates can register directly at Intermediate, and Final requires a pass in both Intermediate groups.

Exams for every level are held in June and December. Alongside the exams, students complete 15 months of practical training plus skills training. ICMAI charges a course fee for each level, which can be paid in two instalments at Intermediate and Final. A separate exam fee is charged each time you sit. The ICWA course duration is not fixed, because it depends on how many attempts each level takes.

  2. Intermediate8 papers in 2 groups. Foundation pass, or a graduate entering directly
  3. Final8 papers in 2 groups, one elective. Needs both Intermediate groups passed
  4. Qualified CMAPlus 15 months of practical training and skills training

Level Papers Who can register Course fee (Indian students)
Foundation 4 papers Class 10 or 10+2 passed ₹6,000
Intermediate 8 papers in 2 groups CMA Foundation pass, or a graduate, or other notified routes ₹23,100 (can be paid in two instalments)
Final 8 papers in 2 groups (one elective) Passed both Intermediate groups ₹25,000 (can be paid in two instalments)

Exam fees are charged separately each time you sit. According to ICMAI’s September 2025 prospectus, they are ₹1,500 for Foundation, ₹1,500 for one Intermediate group or ₹2,800 for both, and ₹1,800 or ₹3,200 for Final. The course fee schedule dates from February 2021 and is repeated in the same prospectus. Check ICMAI’s admission page before paying, because fees can be revised.

Eligibility for each level

ICWA course eligibility, now CMA course eligibility, depends on the level you join (see ICMAI’s course eligibility page). For Foundation, ICMAI’s eligibility page lists a Class 10 pass and also 10+2 or equivalent, with provisional admission and 36 months to convert; confirm with ICMAI whether Class 12 is needed to sit the exam (page read 13 Oct 2026). For Intermediate, you need 10+2 plus a CMA Foundation pass, or a degree in any discipline other than fine arts.

Qualified engineers, engineering students who have finished their second year and certain other exam passers can also join at Intermediate. Students who have passed ICAI’s Intermediate, or who qualify for direct entry to CMA Intermediate, are exempt from Foundation. For Final, you must pass both Intermediate groups first. You also can’t sit Final in the term straight after passing Intermediate. Foundation is open to students from any stream, so arts and science students can join too.

Foundation

ICMAI’s prospectus shows that registration is open after Class 10, but the exam needs a Class 12 pass.

Intermediate

Graduates in any discipline other than fine arts, qualified engineers and second-year-plus engineering students can register directly. Graduates awaiting results can register provisionally.

Final

The gap rule catches many students out. For example, if you clear Intermediate in December, your first Final attempt is the following December, not June.

CMA syllabus: papers at each level

The CMA (formerly ICWA) course syllabus has 20 papers under ICMAI’s Syllabus 2022, moving from accounting and business basics at Foundation to cost audit, tax and strategy at Final. Foundation has four papers on business laws and communication, financial and cost accounting, business mathematics and statistics, and business economics and management. Intermediate has eight papers in two groups (Groups I and II).

They cover business laws, financial and corporate accounting, direct and indirect taxation, cost and management accounting, operations and strategic management, and financial management with business data analytics. Final has eight papers in two groups (Groups III and IV). They cover corporate and economic laws, strategic financial management, direct and international tax, strategic cost management, cost and management audit, corporate financial reporting, indirect tax, and one elective. The paper list below is from ICMAI’s Syllabus 2022 curriculum pages.

Foundation (4 papers)4 topics
  1. Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication
  2. Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting
  3. Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics
  4. Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management
Intermediate (8 papers)

Group I: Business Laws and Ethics; Financial Accounting; Direct and Indirect Taxation; Cost Accounting.

Group II: Operations Management and Strategic Management; Corporate Accounting and Auditing; Financial Management and Business Data Analytics; Management Accounting.

Final (8 papers)

Group III: Corporate and Economic Laws; Strategic Financial Management; Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation; Strategic Cost Management.

Group IV: Cost and Management Audit; Corporate Financial Reporting; Indirect Tax Laws and Practice; and one elective from Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation, Risk Management in Banking and Insurance, or Entrepreneurship and Startup.

Registration dates, exams and pass marks

CMA exams are held twice a year, in June and December. ICMAI’s standard registration cut-off is 31 January for the June term and 31 July for the December term. The exam application itself usually closes on 10 April and 10 October. ICMAI often extends the cut-off: for the June 2026 term it moved to 10 February 2026, and for December 2026 to 4 August 2026.

To pass a CMA exam, you need at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate. At Intermediate and Final, this applies group by group. If you score 60% or more in a paper but fail the group, you can carry an exemption for that paper for the next three terms. There are no paper exemptions at Foundation. Always confirm the current dates on ICMAI’s student notifications page, because extensions are announced by circular close to each cut-off.

Practical training and skills programmes

The CMA course isn’t only exams: ICMAI requires three kinds of training before a student finishes. Practical training lasts 15 months in total. It can start at Intermediate level and must be completed before you sit the remaining Final groups. It can be done under a practising cost accountant or firm, or in a recognised organisation.

Skills training adds 120 hours at Intermediate, covering ERP or Tally, MS Office, e-filing and soft skills, and 80 hours at Final, covering SAP or ERP and data analytics. Final students also complete the Industry Oriented Training Programme, a compulsory 10-day programme finished before filling the exam form. Together, these requirements are one reason the CMA course takes longer than its exam calendar alone suggests. The Intermediate skills module also overlaps with what employers test in accounts jobs.

  • Practical training (15 months): under a practising cost accountant or firm, or in a recognised organisation.
  • Skills training: 120 hours at Intermediate and 80 hours at Final.
  • Industry Oriented Training Programme: 10 days, at Final.

If you want deeper hands-on practice in the software side, short courses such as a Tally Prime course or SAP FICO training cover the same tools in more depth.

Career options after CMA

A CMA qualification, the modern form of ICWA, leads mainly to costing, management accounting and finance roles in companies, and to cost audit in practice. Cost audit is reserved by law: under section 148 of the Companies Act, 2013, a cost auditor must be a cost accountant in practice, meaning an ICMAI member with a certificate of practice. In industry, CMAs work as cost accountants, management accountants, financial analysts, internal auditors and budgeting or MIS staff.

With experience, they can move up to finance controller or CFO. Others take up GST and direct tax work or advise on costing and pricing. Several PSUs and government departments also recruit cost accountants for finance and audit posts. ICMAI runs a campus placement programme for newly qualified CMAs. Starting pay varies widely by employer and city, so judge it by actual campus offers rather than figures quoted without a source.

  • Cost auditor: companies covered by the Companies (Cost Records and Audit) Rules, 2014 must appoint one.
  • Industry roles: costing, management accounting, analysis, internal audit, budgeting and MIS.
  • Taxation and advisory: GST and direct tax work, and consulting on costing and pricing.
  • Public sector: check each PSU or government recruitment notice for eligibility.

The most recent ICMAI campus placement round, for the December 2025 term, was held in April and May 2026 across six cities. In its September 2025 prospectus, ICMAI reports more than 4,000 placements across 2021 to 2024. That’s ICMAI’s own figure, without a published methodology, and it covers qualified members only.

If you want a shorter, government-run route into MSME accounting and compliance work instead of a multi-year qualification, read who can apply for Corporate Mitra and how the 12-month programme works.

CMA or CA: which suits you?

CMA and CA are both long, rigorous qualifications, and neither is simply “easier”. The difference lies in focus and in the work each one reserves by law. CMA, run by ICMAI, centres on cost and management accounting, cost audit and strategy, and cost audit is reserved for cost accountants in practice. CA, run by ICAI, centres on financial reporting, statutory audit and taxation, and statutory audit of companies is reserved for chartered accountants.

CMA exams are held twice a year at every level. CA Foundation and Intermediate run three times a year, and CA Final twice a year from May 2026. CMA requires 15 months of practical training, against two years of CA articleship. If you’re drawn to manufacturing, costing, pricing and performance analysis, CMA fits naturally. If statutory audit and tax practice appeal more, CA is the closer match.

How to register for the CMA course

You register for the CMA course, formerly the ICWA course, online through ICMAI’s student portal. First read the current prospectus and eligibility rules on icmai.in and choose the level you qualify for. That is Foundation after Class 10 or 12 in any stream, or Intermediate directly if you are a graduate. Graduates awaiting results can register provisionally at Intermediate. Register before the cut-off for your chosen term, normally 31 January for June and 31 July for December, although ICMAI often extends it.

Upload your mark sheets, photo and ID, and pay ICMAI’s course fee online. Final registration opens only after you pass both Intermediate groups. After the study period and any required training, submit the exam application by the exam-form deadline, usually 10 April or 10 October. ICMAI publishes its admission rules and notices at icmai.in. Use only the official portal for payments.

  1. Read the current prospectus and eligibility rules on icmai.in.
  2. Register online on ICMAI’s student portal before the cut-off.
  3. Upload your documents (mark sheets, photo, ID) and pay the course fee online.
  4. Complete the study period and training, then apply for the exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is ICWA still valid?

Yes. ICWA is the old name. The qualification continues as CMA, awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, and older ICWA members remain members of the same institute.

Can I do CMA after 12th arts or science?

Yes. Foundation registration is open after Class 10 or 12 from any stream. Non-commerce students should plan extra time for accounting and cost accounting, which are new to them.

Can a graduate skip CMA Foundation?

Yes. Graduates in any discipline except fine arts can register directly for Intermediate. Qualified engineers and some other exam passers are also eligible for direct entry.

How long does the CMA course take?

There’s no fixed duration, because it depends on your attempts. Exams are held only in June and December, you can’t sit Final in the term straight after passing Intermediate, and the 15 months of practical training must be finished before Final. Together, those rules mean that even a student who clears every level first time needs roughly two and a half to three years from Foundation to Final.

What are the CMA course fees in 2026?

According to ICMAI, the course fee for Indian students is ₹6,000 for Foundation, ₹23,100 for Intermediate and ₹25,000 for Final, plus exam fees each time you appear. ICMAI hasn’t announced a fee revision for 2026, but confirm on icmai.in before paying.

Is CMA equivalent to CA?

No. They’re separate qualifications from separate institutes with different focus areas and different reserved work: cost audit for CMAs and statutory company audit for CAs. Both are recognised professional qualifications in India.

What does ICWA mean in commerce?

In commerce, ICWA means the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants, the old name of the body that awards the cost accounting qualification. The course is now called CMA (Cost and Management Accountant) and is run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.

What is the salary after the ICWA (CMA) course?

There is no official salary figure for CMAs. Pay depends on the employer, city and role, and ICMAI publishes placement numbers for its campus drives without salary data you can rely on. Compare actual campus and job offers for cost accountant and management accountant roles rather than figures quoted online.
