The BAT course (Business Accounting and Taxation) at IPA is an 8-month diploma for the tax desk. It takes bookkeeping in Tally Prime and BUSY through to GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, TDS returns, ITR filing (ITR 1 to 4 in IPA’s syllabus) and an introduction to income tax assessment procedures. It is the IPA diploma built around tax practice rather than salaried-office work. Put simply, BAT is an accounting and taxation course: you learn to keep the books and to file the returns that come out of them. It suits 12th commerce students and B.Com graduates heading for a tax practitioner’s office or a small CA firm, and business owners who want to see how their records become their tax bill. IPA – Institute of Professional Accountants has trained accountants in Delhi since 2003 and teaches BAT at E-54, Laxmi Nagar, or in live online batches, with fast track available. As a diploma it carries IPA’s 100% job guarantee: interviews until you are placed, subject to your performance and IPA’s criteria.
The job BAT prepares you for
In a tax practitioner’s office or a small CA firm, the same junior often keeps a client’s books and prepares that client’s returns. BAT trains for that double role. Each entry you post ends up in a GST liability, a TDS deduction or a taxable income figure, so accounting and taxation are taught together rather than as separate subjects.
Owners of small businesses take it for the same reason: seeing how your own records turn into your tax bill is the point. And because BAT has no payroll module, all eight months stay on accounts and tax.
What is in the syllabus, and what is not
IPA lists seven subjects: business accounting, Tally Prime, BUSY, online ITR filing, TDS return filing, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing, and income tax assessment procedures. GSTR-1 reports a business’s outward supplies; GSTR-3B is the summary return through which the GST due for the period is paid.
Assessment procedures cover what happens after a return is filed: how the department processes it, why a notice might follow, and what the practitioner does next. For anyone heading into a tax office, that context is useful from the first week.
Two gaps are deliberate. There is no PF, ESI or salary processing, and none of the corporate toolkit (audit, Advanced Excel, SAP FICO) that the 15- and 18-month diplomas carry.
A season in a tax office
A BAT graduate in a practitioner’s office spends much of the year on routines like these:
- collecting clients’ sales and purchase bills, posting them in Tally Prime or BUSY and checking them before the GST filing;
- preparing GSTR-1 from the sales register and GSTR-3B with the tax payable for the period;
- working out TDS on a client’s rent, contract and professional payments and filing the quarterly return;
- in return season, gathering salary certificates, interest statements and bank details, then computing income and filing ITRs for individual and small-business clients;
- collating documents, under the practitioner’s guidance, when a client receives a query from the income tax department.
Entry roles are usually accountant or taxation assistant. IPA’s page also mentions accounts, finance and taxation manager posts, but those come after several years of experience.
BAT course salary: what the data shows
Figures for the roles BAT leads to, with their sources:
- Tax assistants in the accounting and auditing industry report about ₹2.9 lakh to ₹3.4 lakh a year on AmbitionBox (as of 24 September 2026).
- Junior accountants in India average about ₹2.9 lakh a year on the same site, or roughly ₹23,800 a month (updated 24 September 2026).
- For larger employers, Randstad India’s Salary Trends Report 2024-25 gives an average junior CTC in Delhi-NCR of ₹5.23 lakh for taxation roles, against ₹4.49 lakh for general accounting.
That last gap is the case for a tax-focused diploma, but it opens with experience, not on day one. A first job in a small practice usually pays nearer the self-reported figures.
BAT course duration, batches and fees
BAT takes 8 months, and the fast-track option shortens it for students who can attend more classes each week. Weekday and weekend batches are available, with flexible timings depending on your batch: you can study in person at E-54, Laxmi Nagar, or in live online batches, which is how students outside Delhi take it through the online accounting course route.
BAT course fees at IPA
BAT is an 8-month diploma, and its fee depends on the batch you pick, on classroom or live online, on whether you take the fast-track option, and on any offer running when you enquire. Ask what the quote covers: study material, practice in Tally Prime, BUSY and the tax portals, the IPA certificate, the placement guarantee and how instalments work.
When you compare BAT course fees elsewhere, check the total hours, whether GST, TDS and income tax return filing are all taught hands-on, and whether placement help is in the price or extra. Call or WhatsApp 9213855555 to hear the figure for your batch.
BAT course online: live batches across India
Yes, the BAT course can be taken online. IPA runs Business Accounting and Taxation in live online batches for students anywhere in India, taught live on Zoom by a trainer. The same seven subjects are taught at Laxmi Nagar: business accounting, Tally Prime, BUSY, online ITR filing, TDS returns, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing, and income tax assessment procedures.
What stays the same when you study online:
- the syllabus, the trainers and the order of the practical work;
- the IPA certificate at the end of the course;
Online, you also get recorded lectures on IPA’s own LMS, weekday and weekend batches with flexible timings, and placement support, and the instructor guides your Tally Prime and portal practice. Book a free demo class before you enrol. The other subjects taught live online are listed on IPA’s online accounting course in India page.
BAT or another IPA course?
BAT is the right call if
- you want to work in a CA firm or for a tax practitioner, where filing is daily work;
- you run a business and want to understand, and check, your own GST and income tax;
- you want a guaranteed-placement diploma in under a year.
Another course is the right call if
- You want payroll as well. The 6-month diploma teaches PF, ESI and salary sheets but not ITR filing; the 12-month ADFA has both.
- You want tax law without the accounting software. The 5-month Diploma in Taxation is tax-only and also carries the guarantee.
- GST is the only subject you need. The 2-month GST course comes with placement assistance.
- Corporate finance teams are your target. The 15-month diploma adds SAP FICO, Advanced Excel and auditing.
How BAT is taught
The course follows data from start to finish. You post a set of transactions, then carry the same figures into the GST, TDS and income tax returns, so the link between an entry and the tax it creates is visible every time. Batches are small, which leaves room to ask about the awkward cases: a credit note, a disallowed expense, a missing PAN.
The faculty IPA lists for tax subjects includes Mr. Mohit (CA, 10+ years, income tax and audit), Ms. Neena (CA, 20+ years), Mr. Sanjeev (CA, over 20 years in tax and audit) and Ms. Shikha (MBA, ten years in GST and Tally). IPA’s team numbers eight listed trainers (three CAs, two M.Com, two MBA and one B.Com graduate, five with over 20 years’ experience), with other CA and MBA faculty for specialised sessions. Each trainer is introduced on the faculty page. Weekday and weekend batches run in person or online, with flexible timings depending on your batch, and there is a fast-track option.
Does BAT come with a job guarantee?
BAT is classed as a diploma, so it carries IPA’s 100% job guarantee. After the course IPA keeps arranging interviews until you are placed, provided you meet the performance standard and other criteria in the guarantee terms. IPA gives its diploma placement rate as more than 98%.
