TallyPrime Shortcut Keys: Complete List for Release 7.x – IPA guide illustration

The TallyPrime shortcut keys you’ll use most are the six voucher keys: F4 Contra, F5 Payment, F6 Receipt, F7 Journal, F8 Sales and F9 Purchase. Add Alt+G to go to any report, Ctrl+A to save and Esc to go back. Learn those nine first and you’ll handle most daily entry work without a mouse.

This list is checked against the official keyboard shortcuts table in TallyHelp as of 24 September 2026, which covers TallyPrime 7.x. Many shortcut lists online still mix in Tally.ERP 9 keys or plain errors; a section near the end corrects the common ones.

Which Tally Prime shortcut keys should you learn first? The top 15

Learn the six voucher keys first: F4 Contra, F5 Payment, F6 Receipt, F7 Journal, F8 Sales and F9 Purchase. They cover almost every entry a junior accountant posts in a day. Next come the keys that move you around: Alt+G opens Go To, where you type the name of any report, voucher or master, Esc closes a screen and Ctrl+A saves it. F2 changes the voucher date or the report period, which you will press constantly while practising in Educational mode.

Alt+C creates a missing ledger without leaving the voucher, and Ctrl+Enter alters the master you are standing on. Enter drills down from a report line to the entry behind it. F11 opens Company Features, and Ctrl+F1 opens TallyHelp for the screen you are on. Together these 15 keys handle navigation, saving and the six everyday vouchers. Practise them until you stop looking them up.

Key What it does
Alt+G Go To: open any report, or create a voucher or master, from almost any screen
Ctrl+A Accept (save) the current screen
Esc Close the current screen and go back

F6 Receipt voucher

Ctrl+Enter Alter the master you’re on, from a voucher or report
Enter Drill down from a report line to the details or voucher
F11 Company Features
Ctrl+F1 Open the TallyHelp article for the current screen

Export Tally data to Excel: shortcut and steps

To export data from Tally to Excel, open the report you want and press Alt+E, the Export key. Pick Excel (Spreadsheet) as the format, check the file name and folder, and accept. The same Alt+E works on vouchers and on most reports, so a Day Book, a ledger or a Trial Balance can all go to Excel the same way.

Ctrl+E is different: TallyHelp says it exports statutory returns in a fixed format, with no choice of format, so use Alt+E when you want an Excel sheet to work on. These are the keys behind a question beginners often ask: in Tally, which key exports data to Excel? It is Alt+E.

Tally.ERP 9 keys that changed in TallyPrime

If you trained on Tally.ERP 9, these are the keys most likely to trip you up. Both columns come from Tally’s official comparison table.

The trap is that Alt+G, Alt+K, Alt+E, Alt+M and Alt+P still exist in TallyPrime but now open menus (Go To, Company, Export, Share, Print). Pressing an old habit key won’t cause an error; it just opens something unexpected.

Commonly misquoted Tally shortcuts, corrected

Older blog posts, including an earlier version of this one, carried several wrong keys. Here’s what the official table actually says:

  • Alt+G is Go To, not Day Book. TallyPrime has no single Day Book key; use Alt+G > Day Book or open it from the Gateway.
  • Ctrl+Alt+T shows TDL and add-on details, not the Trial Balance. Open the Trial Balance through Alt+G.
  • Alt+F3 selects another company from the data path. F3 switches between companies already open.
  • Alt+2 duplicates a voucher in a report. It doesn’t open any tax report.
  • Ctrl+O during voucher entry opens Related Reports. It doesn’t open a voucher.
  • Alt+N in a report auto-repeats columns. The calculator is Ctrl+N (or Alt+C from an amount field).
  • Alt+B is not a Banking menu key; banking reports open from Gateway of Tally > Banking or Alt+G.

Interviewers do ask shortcut questions, so it pays to know the correct ones. See how they come up in our Tally Prime interview questions for freshers.

How to learn Tally shortcuts quickly

Memorising a table rarely sticks. Using keys on real entries does. A few habits help:

  • Read the screen. TallyPrime shows each button’s key on the right-side panel and bottom bar, and underlines the letter to press in menus.
  • Ban the mouse for a week. Enter every practice voucher using keys only.
  • Learn in layers. Master the 15 keys above, then vouchers and entry keys, then report keys.
  • Press Ctrl+F1 when stuck. It opens TallyHelp for the exact screen you’re on.

If you haven’t installed the software yet, our free TallyPrime download guide explains Educational mode, and our guide on how to learn Tally step by step sets out where shortcuts fit in a study plan. For structured practice with a trainer, see IPA’s Tally course in Delhi; the full Tally Prime syllabus lists the topics from basic to advanced.

How we teach this at IPA

Shortcut keys only stick when you use them on real entries, which is how the Tally course at IPA is taught: every topic is practised on the software, entry by entry, until the routine work feels normal. Mr. Santosh and Mr. Ravindar teach Tally Prime and BUSY, and the online batches are taken by the same trainers.
